As we age, so do our brains of course. And while there is no known cure at this time for Parkinson’s disease or way to prevent it, we do know that the odds of maintaining a healthy brain increase if you eat some common smart foods and drinks. According to WebMD.com, some of things that can lead to a healthier brain and better concentration include:
- Fish: It really is brain food! Many types of fish are rich in oemga-3 fatty acids that are important for a healthy brain. A diet with more fish can lead to lower rates of dementia and stroke and slower mental decline. Fish also can help us to enhance our memories.
- Nuts and chocolate for vitamin E: Nuts and seeds, as well as dark chocolate is linked to slower cognitive decline as you age. Dark chocolate also has strong antioxidant properties, as well as caffeine, which can boost concentration.
- Blueberries: This fruit is a super food, and can help to protect the brain from damage from free radicals. Blueberries also may reduce effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Studies indicate that diets rich in blueberries can boost the learning and muscle function of rats, too.
- Avocados and whole grains: All body organs depend upon good blood flow for optimum function, including the brain and heart. A diet with a lot of grains and fruits can reduce the chance of high cholesterol and heart disease.
- Chocolate and coffee for caffeine: While taking in too much caffeine can lead to health problems, it also can increase your ability to concentrate and keep up energy levels.
- Breakfast: If you are thinking about not eating breakfast, know that eating early can boost your memory and attention. Students who eat breakfast usually have a higher level of performance than those who don’t. Make sure you eat plenty of whole grains, dairy and fruits. But do not eat too many calories as this can hurt the ability to concentrate.
