Parkinson’s disease is really a family disease. By that we mean that it takes a dedicated team of loved ones to help a person with PD to live as normal a life as possible. But in many cases, the majority of the care responsibility lies with one person. This could be a spouse, friend or child. For that person (and maybe it is YOU), life changes forever when the loved one is diagnosed with PD. And that person must take on many new responsibilities.
Over and over, caregivers for PD patients report many of the same experiences and challenges as they help their loved ones. Some of the most important tips for caregivers to follow include:
- Be actively involved: You should try to attend every medical appointment for your loved one that you can. Research has proven that PD patients with active care givers do better over time.
- Ask questions: Really. Ask questions, a lot of questions, until you understand the answer. This is a complex disease and there is a lot for the layperson to understand. Do not worry about asking too many questions, and be sure to ask a lot about any medications that your loved one is prescribed. What is it for, what are the side effects, when should it be taken.
- Make sure your loved one is honest with the doctor: People with PD may want to leave out vital pieces of information when they are speaking with their MD. They might think that that piece of information does not matter, or they might be embarrassed. Make sure that your loved one is telling their doctor everything about their condition.
- Get to know the nurses: Whatever type of medical facility your loved one is in short or long term, get to know the folks who are caring for him. You might need to explain how important it is that medications be administered on time, and you could be a good PD resource for them as well. A well educated caregiver on the disease may well know things that nurses don’t.
- Become a support services expert: Your community may have support and services for people with PD and their caregivers. Check with your local government to see what’s available.
